Dami Kim – Musicalta

The violinist Dami Kim is a multiple awards and honors’ winner, who has been awarded the first prize in the 2012 Hannover Joseph Joachim International Competition in Germany, as part of which she received a G.B. Guadagnini violin and a CD recording contract with Naxos. She was honored as a Laureate for both the 2012 Queen Elisabeth International Competition in Belgium and the 2014 Indianapolis Violin Competition in the United States, earning the ‘Best Performance of a Classical Concerto’ and ‘Best Performance of a Beethoven Sonata’ prizes.

She received the 2nd prize (no 1st prize awarded) during the 2010 53rd Premio Paganini Competition in Italy, where she was also given the ‘Barbieri Special prize’ for the best interpretation of Paganini Capricci, and the ‘Ruminelli Special prize’.

Dami Kim won the first prize in the 2011 3rd Munetsugu Angel Violin International Competition in Japan, where she had the opportunity to play the Stradivarious “Rainville” violin for 2 years.

The musician also received other additional prizes in various competitions worldwide, including the 2010 Sendai International Competition in Japan, the 2009 Michael Hill Violin International Competition in New Zealand, second prize in the 2006 Johansen International Competition in the United States, as well as the 2004 Greenfield Philadelphia Orchestra Competition.

From country to country, Dami Kim forged herself a career as a soloist with her recitals. Her Debut Recital in the 2015 Swiss Lucerne Festival, and her performance with the NDR Philharmonie in Hannover, Germany with Maestro Manze were both memorable.

The musician furthermore showcased her soloist talents alongside renowned orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Macau Orchestra, Orchestra Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Seoul Phil Orchestra, the KBS Orchestra, the Wuhan Phil Orchestra, the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Thailand Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and various other prestigious orchestras.

In addition to her solo violinist career, the artist frequently takes part in several chamber music festivals. She has participated in festivals such as Ravinia, Yellow Barn, and Taos, and worked with several renowned artists, including Frans Helmerson, Gidon Kremer, Steven Isserlis, and Christian Tetzlaff. And most recently, she made her soloist debut with Kremerata Baltica at the Kronberg Music Festival.

In 2018, Dami Kim released her debut album under the SONY Classical label on Dvorak violin pieces, including the concerto, with Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra. A few years later, in 2022, she released another piece under the same label, with her album.<Timepass>. Both albums ranked amongst the Best Selling Classical Album section in Korea.

The artist had begun learning the violin at age five in Korea and had entered the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States with a full scholarship in 2002. She graduated and obtained her Artist’s Diploma in 2007, studying with violinist Aaron Rosand.

From 2010 to 2013, she was in the New England Conservatory, studying with renowned violinist Miriam Fried, and graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree. In 2009, she won the Concerto Competition and performed with the NEC Symphony Orchestra. She furthermore studied in Kronberg Academy in Germany until 2016 and pursued her PhD of Musical Arts in Performance in Stony Brook University in New York.

Dami Kim has been working since 2020 at Seoul National University in South Korea, using her violin crafted by Stephan von Baehr.
