The mezzo-soprano Alexandra Rawohl discovered her passion for singing early on and gained her first stage experience at the age of eight as a member of the children’s choir in opera productions at the theater in her hometown of Hildesheim. After an intensive period training various dance styles, she decided to pursue vocal studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold. There, she studied with Thomas Quasthoff and Gerhild Romberger, focusing particularly on German art song. In 2000, she won the first prize at the prestigious National Vocal Competition in Berlin.
A semester abroad at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney introduced her to new musical perspectives and experiences. After completing her diploma in Detmold, where she performed the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Alexandra developed a passion for the Baroque repertoire. This interest led her to further studies in Early Music at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, where she studied with Ulrich Messthaler, Andreas Scholl, and Rosa Dominguez. Her engagement with Baroque performance practice was further enriched through courses in Baroque gesture with Margit Legler and Reinhold Kubik. She portrayed the Sorceress in a performance of Dido and Aeneas in Bad Lauchstädt and gave several lectures on Baroque gesture, where she also demonstrated her expertise practically.
Also in her final recital at the Schola Cantorum, she performed arias by Farinelli and Caffarelli using Baroque gestures, with some of these performances available on YouTube.
Additional studies with Dominik Wörner, Verena Schweizer, and Roswitha Müller, as well as master classes with Bernarda Fink, Christoph Prégardien, and Margreet Honig, provided her with valuable insights that also influenced her teaching style.
As a soloist, Alexandra Rawohl has performed at venues including the Mainz Cathedral, Freiburg Minster, Basel Minster, and the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow. She has appeared in productions with Pocket Opera Zurich, Theater Basel, the Early Music Festival in Lviv (Ukraine), and the Origen Festival in Switzerland, where she worked with conductors such as Rudolf Lutz, Andrea Marcon, Stefano Molardi, and Alexander Rudin. Additionally, she regularly sings with professional choirs and ensembles, including the Bach Foundation St. Gallen, Ensemble Vocal Origen, the Basler Madrigalisten, and the Bavarian Radio Choir.
For nearly 30 years, Alexandra Rawohl has worked as a private voice teacher. She completed her studies in vocal pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold with a thesis on Italian singing schools of the Baroque period. Her extensive experience as a vocal coach also serves her well in her role as a choir director in Basel, a role she carries out with great passion. Since 2019, she has also taught as a lecturer in voice at the Freiburg University of Music.
